Description

The Garden Sun Red® Dwarf Apple Tree is a self-fertile dwarf variety with high productivity. It is suitable for growing in pots or in the ground. It produces large, round, uniformly red fruits. The flesh is of very good quality, sweet, juicy, and crisp. Harvest takes place in October and the fruits can be stored until March. The Garden Sun Red® Dwarf Apple Tree requires pruning to avoid alternate bearing and to obtain large fruits.

The apple tree is native to Europe, including France, where its presence has been documented since ancient times. The Garden Sun Red® Dwarf Apple Tree is a selected variety from the USA.

The Garden Sun Red® Dwarf Apple Tree has an upright habit. As a small tree, it is space-saving. It can be grown in the ground or in pots, making it perfect for orchards, small gardens, hedges, terraces, and pergolas. It has abundant productivity, so pruning is necessary to avoid small fruit size and the occurrence of diseases.
Its foliage consists of large, ovate, slightly hairy, dark green leaves on top and whitish-green underneath, with deeply toothed edges.
The abundant flowering, which is late and white, occurs in April. The flowering is not affected by frost. Therefore, the apple tree is suitable for cultivation in all regions.

Fruit production begins in October. The fruits can be stored in a cool place (cellar or refrigerator) until March. The large fruits are round and uniformly red. The flesh is of very good quality, sweet, juicy, and crisp.

These apples are particularly good for eating fresh or cooking. They can also be used in pastries, jams, jellies, or savory dishes, in combination with Normandy cheeses, for example.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny spot for your Garden Sun Red® Dwarf Apple Tree, the soil can be slightly chalky or acidic but not excessive. Dig a large planting hole at least 3 times the volume of the root ball. Simultaneously add organic matter (topsoil, compost...) and a base fertilizer such as crushed crown. Do not bury the graft collar. Stake if necessary. Water generously, even in winter, even if it rains. Fruit trees are ideally planted between October and March, outside the freezing period. Container-grown plants can be planted all year round except during periods of high heat or frost.

You can add a small handful of wood ash, rich in potash, during winter to improve fruiting. Watch out for possible aphid attacks during the season. A white felting due to a fungus, powdery mildew, may appear on the leaves in summer, but it does not harm fruit development in gardens. Harvest takes place in September. Only store picked fruits. Apples are stored with the stem down, on shelves or in crates. Choose a preferably completely dark, dry and cool place, but frost-free.

Care

Pruning instructions The pruning of your apple tree can be limited to a simple removal of dead or obstructive branches at the end of winter, in March. During the first 3 or 4 years, you can also encourage the formation of 4 or 5 main branches, resulting in a goblet-shaped habit, which is traditional in fruit tree cultivation. In any case, make sure to leave some spaces in the tree's structure for good air circulation and light. Don't hesitate to thin out fruit clusters in June. Removing some fruits relieves fragile branches and helps to achieve a better size.
