Description

The Amsden Peach is an old and vigorous self-fertile variety. It is early, highly productive, and has good resistance to diseases, including peach leaf curl. Its white, acidic, and juicy peaches are dark red. Fairly large, about 7cm (3in) in diameter, they are round with slight asymmetry. Harvest takes place at ripeness, early in June, beginning of July.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach, which was thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. Its appearance in Europe occurred in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century. From there, numerous selections aimed at improving the fruit's taste qualities took place. The Amsden Peach resulted from a chance sowing obtained before 1900 by Sir Amsden, who gave it his name, in Missouri, USA. Its first registration in the catalogue dates back to 1961.

Like many fruit trees, the Amsden Peach appreciates light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils. A sunny location sheltered from the wind will compensate for its sensitivity to spring frosts due to its early ripening. It is a vigorous tree with an upright habit, indicating a high trunk tree with many branches growing vertically, giving it a slender and elegant silhouette. Its deciduous foliage is a bright green and emits a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in width, with short petioles.

Its early pink flowering occurs in March. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile.

Fruiting is also early, starting in late June. Its white, acidic, and juicy fruits are dark red. This tree does not require too much maintenance and tolerates pruning well.

Peaches can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savoury, flambéed, iced, or glazed. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, including jams, compotes, pastries etc.

Planting and care

The Amsden Peach is best planted from October to December. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, so that the entire root ball is moistened by capillary action. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Gently firm the soil around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water thoroughly.

The Amsden Peach has a semi-taproot system. It thrives in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the spring following planting, a first training pruning will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will form the tree's framework (about 5 branches). The fruit appears on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the centre that are crossing each other and shorten the longest ones that extend outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, November to December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
