Description

Calathea roseopicta 'Angela' (now named Goeppertia roseopicta) is a variety of peacock plant. This tropical houseplant is grown for its highly decorative, well-contrasted foliage, finely streaked with green, pink and a purple reverse. Placed in a pretty decorative pot, it will adorn a corner of a living room, office, or bedroom, but never behind a window without a sheer curtain. Its large leaves, which rise in the evening and lower in the morning, animate the room. It is non-toxic, so suitable for homes with children and pets.

Botanically, Goeppertia roseopicta belongs to the Marantaceae family, which includes the famous prayer plants. The species is native to the humid tropical forests of northwestern Brazil and more broadly the Amazon basin, where it grows in the shade of large trees, in filtered light and constant warmth.
The 'Angela' cultivar forms a compact and slightly spreading clump approximately 60 to 80 cm tall and up to 60 cm wide, from a short rhizome. The young leaves have a dark green centre marked by a pink midrib, surrounded by a wide border of purplish-pink or very pale green. As they age, the leaf becomes covered with dark green stripes on a lighter green background, this pale border turning silvery green, while the reverse retains a pronounced purple to reddish-purple hue. The quite rigid but thin leaves are slightly wavy on the edges and move daily: they rise at night and lower during the day.
The small whitish-purple flowers borne near the base are not very obvious and rarely appear indoors. The plant is not toxic to pets.

Indoors, Calathea 'Angela' appreciates soft light, a humid atmosphere (50–70% humidity), and stable temperatures, between 18 and 26 °C. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 16 °C. It is a plant for somewhat experienced enthusiasts, as it is sensitive to air that is too dry, cold draughts, and overwatering.
It performs particularly well in a bright living room, an east or west-facing bedroom, a bathroom with a window, or a heated conservatory.

With its upright habit and large, striking leaves, Calathea 'Angela' quickly becomes the centrepiece of a plant corner, placed in a decorative pot on the floor or on a stool. It pairs easily with other shade-loving, humidity-tolerant houseplants. Create a small group around it: a Calathea roseopicta 'Rosy', a Calathea 'Fusion White' beside it for its cream marbling, and a Calathea 'Yellow Fusion' or a Ctenanthe oppenheimiana in the background to add height. Vary the decorative pots – matte stoneware, woven rattan, white ceramic – while staying within the same soft colour palette. The whole creates a refined jungle corner, very cohesive and easy to maintain, not far from an east or north-facing window.
