Description

The Calathea roseopicta 'Jessie' (now named Goeppertia roseopicta) is a variety of peacock plant sought after for its particularly dark leaves traversed by very decorative pink lines. Of modest stature, it fits into contemporary or more classic interiors, on a sideboard, desk, or shelf. It is a "prayer plant": its leaves, which rise up in the evening, react to changes in light and create a gentle, exotic tropical atmosphere in your home.

The calathea belongs to the Marantaceae family, which includes the famous prayer plants with mobile leaves. The botanical species Calathea (Goeppertia) roseopicta, also described under the synonym Maranta roseopicta, is native to the humid tropical forests of South America, where it grows at ground level, in the shade of the canopy.
A herbaceous, rhizomatous perennial, Goeppertia roseopicta 'Jessie', or 'Princess Jesse', forms a rounded clump 40 to 50 cm in height and about 40 cm wide. Its leaves, ovate to almost round, measure 15 to 20 cm long; their upper surface, of a very dark green to almost black, is adorned with a pink pattern that follows the central vein and extends into fine lateral veins. The underside displays a very pronounced purplish violet colour, clearly visible when the leaves rise up in the evening. The flowering, consisting of small white-violet flowers in the heart of the foliage, remains discreet and quite rare indoors: the interest of this plant lies primarily in its foliage. Like the entire genus, this plant is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it suitable for homes with pets.

Indoors, it requires soft to bright light without direct sun, fairly humid air, and stable temperatures between 18 and 24°C, avoiding cold draughts and prolonged drops below 15°C. It is a plant with medium requirements, rather intended for enthusiasts already somewhat familiar with tropical plants, as it reacts quickly to air that is too dry and to overwatering, as well as to substrates that dry out completely. It performs particularly well in a bright living room, an east or west-facing bedroom, a bathroom with a window, or a heated conservatory.

To showcase the Calathea 'Princess Jessie', place it in a simple planter, in matte or dark glazed ceramic, and make it the focal point of a small jungle corner near a filtered window. Around it, add Ctenanthe lubbersiana 'Golden Mosaic', with leaves variegated in yellow, and Calathea makoyana, with green and silver striped foliage. At the base or on the edge of the furniture, the Fittonia 'Pink Special' will form a bright pink carpet, while a taller pot will host Calathea roseopicta 'Dottie' with black and magenta hues. All these plants appreciate soft light, a humid atmosphere, and a moist substrate, allowing for similar watering and misting routines for the entire group.
