On 2 naked plants, planted in the autumn, only one has survived and even then, it is tiny and just starting to shoot (it's late May). The same goes for the young plant: only one has survived, the other is still small for now, I'm waiting to see it develop.

Collection items (4 plants)

Description

This collection of 4 shade-loving perennials blooms from May to September. These perennials create a soft contrast between the intense pink, almost red, of the 'Hadspen Blood' masterwort and the delicate, anise green flowering of Alchemilla mollis.

The collection is composed of:

- 2 'Hadspen Blood' masterwort

- 2 Alchemilla mollis

These perennials are very robust and can grow in full sun or partial shade in heavy and moist soil. Plant Alchemilla mollis at the edge of the flower bed, and place the 'Hadspen Blood' masterwort in the background, keeping a distance of 30cm (12in) between the plants. To maintain a romantic and wild style, mix them with catmints, perennial geraniums, meadow rues, and knotweeds.

Planting and care

In fresh soil, plant your Astrancias and your Alchemilla mollis in full sun or partial shade, avoiding excessive heat exposure (midday sun). In humus-bearing soil, these perennials self-seed and easily produce new seedlings capable of flowering within a few weeks, prolonging the flowering period for several months. To plant your pot, prepare your soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), crumble the soil well, and place a base amendment such as dried blood or dehydrated horn at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, and cover the top of the root ball with 3cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root establishment. In wet weather, keep slugs away, as young plantings are susceptible to them. How? Use wood ash, anti-slug poison, or even beer! Each of these solutions is highly effective.
