Graden Merit
The multiple pink flowers of this lovely perennial ground cover succeed each other throughout summer, adding colour to walls, the edges of pathways, and to rock gardens. This small semi-evergreen ground cover plant is not demanding: light soil and a sunny exposure are sufficient for it. It even tolerates limestone soils, withstands slight drought, and resists cold. Its foliage forms a beautiful plump grey-green cushion and welcomes its small, lively and cheerful flowers.

Description

Silene schafta 'Splendens' is an easy and generous perennial ground cover. It forms a beautiful cushion of pretty grey-green foliage that is covered with multiple small magenta-pink flowers from July to September. Easy and low-maintenance, it can be used to add colour to rockeries and the edges of pathways for a long period of time, bringing a natural and delicate touch to various corners of the garden.

Silene is a small hardy plant that can withstand cold temperatures and even retains its foliage all year round in mild climates. It thrives in light soil, not necessarily rich, and can tolerate both moist and slightly dry conditions. It also tolerates calcareous soils. Its only requirement is that it needs the sun.

It is an herbaceous perennial with flexible stems that grow up to 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) tall and spread over an area of 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in). It has simple lanceolate leaves that are opposite each other, measuring 1cm (0.4in) in length. It forms a thick and plump grey-green cushion that carpets the ground. From this compact tuft emerge pink flowers with a hint of magenta. They have 5 slightly notched petals that open widely and emerge from a swollen calyx of the same deep hue. Though small, they are abundant and bloom throughout the summer season, providing a striking and colourful display. Its preferred locations include walls (with minimal substrate and avoiding excessive exposure to heat), borders of flower beds and patios, rockeries, and pots and half barrels.

Silene schafta 'Splendens' is a great companion for adding splashes of colour around pathways, as well as around certain plants. It creates beautiful carpets for summer bulbs or roses, whose bases are often bare. It also welcomes lilies, gladioli, and agapanthus. In a rockery, consider pairing it with Aster rugulosus and a collection of moss phlox to extend the flowering period.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn in well-drained and rather light soil. Not very demanding, it will be satisfied with poor soil and will tolerate moist soils with periods of drought. It also tolerates limestone soils. However, it absolutely requires a sunny exposure.

If you choose to plant it on a wall, make sure to provide it with substrate for it to establish and water it well. Planting in this way should only be done in regions with mild and relatively rainy climates, not in areas with scorching sun.

It requires no maintenance.
