Description

The Carex oshimensis Evercream is a more vigorous form of the Everest variety. This plant forms a beautiful, slightly tousled, bright clump with green-blue, ribbon-like foliage margined with cream-white. Its autumnal flowering is pretty, with small brown-pink spikes. This grass looks beautiful all year round. It is perfect as a border plant or in a container as long as it is grown in moist but well-drained soil and partial shade to accentuate the light colour of its foliage.

The Carex oshimensis Evercream is a type of sedge that belongs to the Cyperaceae family. This small grass grows in clumps with a compact, erect, cascading habit. It can reach 35 to 40 cm (15.7 in) in height and 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter and has evergreen, grass-like leaves that can grow up to 30 cm (11.8 in) in length. The edges of the leaves are tapered, and their tips droop. The leaves have a dark green-blue shade with a wider cream-white margin when grown in partial shade and a narrower margin in full sun. In autumn, thin stems about 20 cm (7.9 in) tall appear among the foliage, bearing numerous short spikes ranging from brown to pink and measuring 1 to 3 cm (1.2 in) in length.

`The Oshima Evercream Sedge is a beautiful foliage plant that can be used as a container border. It has a refined design that looks great on its own but can also be paired with other plants, such as rodgersia, ferns, and heucheras, to create lighter and more lush foliage. This plant thrives in moist to wet soils, so it's perfect for water gardens, banks, and water features where it can help stabilise the soil. It's also a great addition to perennial borders and can be planted en masse to create a beautiful wild effect in contemporary or country gardens. This carex can tolerate occasional drought, making it suitable for rock gardens alongside cotton lavender and wormwood.

Planting and care

The Carex oshimensis can thrive in all types of soil as long as they are moist but also well-drained. It can endure moderate droughts, making it an easy grass to grow and nurture. This plant is versatile and can adapt to any type of exposure, however, it will have brighter foliage in partial shade or dappled sunlight. While planting, it is important to water abundantly and avoid using heavy fertilisers. It is advised to plant it outside of frost periods. You can remove any damaged foliage at the end of winter, but make sure not to cut it down to the ground, as it could potentially kill the plant.
