Miscanthus sinensis Etincelle - Silvergrass

Miscanthus sinensis 'Etincelle' is a particularly graceful variety of maiden grass. It bears superb foliage irregularly marked with light yellow spots on a green background. When the wind animates its vegetation, this Chinese reed truly seems to sparkle in the sun. Its abundant flowering, in purple spikes, starts in late summer and lasts until winter on marcescent foliage. It brings rhythm and solemnity to flower beds, even during winter which does not alter its beautiful fountain-like silhouette. This ornamental grass is ideal for small gardens and perennial flower beds, or for decorating patios and balconies.

'Etincelle' belongs to the Poaceae family. It is a recently obtained horticultural form in France, derived from Miscanthus sinensis, native to East Asia and Oceania. This variety resembles Miscanthus 'Zebrinus', but develops finer leaves and more discreet speckles of straw-yellow. This perennial grass with short rhizomes grows in clumps, as it is non-invasive. The habit is both compact and erect, reaching a height of about 1 to 1.2m (3 to 4ft) when flowering, with a spread of 80cm (32in), or slightly more. The leaves are very thin, very long, flexible and trailing, with a finely green colour punctuated with pale-yellow. Long floral stems emerge from the foliage from August to November, in the form of digitate and silky spikes 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in) long. They are initially dark purple. When fading, they take on a beautiful cream-white colour. The plumes consist of tiny red flowers that close a little after opening, then reopen when mature. They then take on a paler and fluffier appearance.

This maiden grass shows a very graceful habit and marcescent foliage that remains decorative for much of the winter. It is an "herb" that can be planted in the second row of large flower beds to which its strong presence brings structure and grace. It is suitable for wild gardens and contemplative gardeners. Just plant it among tall asters, in the company of red or fuchsia shrubby salvias, hastate verbenas, or perpetual daylilies. Watch it grow and expand, play with the wind and the low light of autumn, and bend under rain showers. It also has its place in modern gardens with clean lines, in the company of dwarf bamboos or ophiopogon. These grasses bring volume and texture to perennial flower beds, lightening their blooms. In an urban garden, it will soften concrete structures. Growing in large containers is also highly recommended, allowing you to furnish a patio or balcony with great elegance and sobriety.
