Mukdenia rossii Crimson Fans
Mukdenia rossii Crimson Fans
Planted in autumn at the base of a water butt, with low light, poor and semi-moist soil, the young plant in the bucket seemed to be in a sorry state, falling apart; I didn't really believe in it... What a delight to see it emerge in early spring. It is so discreet and delicate, I had trouble understanding that it was the 2 Mudkenia that I had planted! The flowers have disappeared since but the foliage is still pleasant.

Description
Mukdenia rossii 'Crimson Fans', also known as Ross's Mukdenia or Aceriphyllum rossii, has beautifully coloured foliage and thrives in shady and moist areas. This small ground cover perennial forms its flowers in winter, while its foliage is still dormant. In spring, panicles of small white-greenish flowers rise above its heavily palmate foliage. This foliage forms a beautiful tuft and turns dark green with stunning purple-orange highlights in summer, then purple in autumn. This mukdenia truly deserves to be used more. It will thrive in any fertile, moist, soil like a shaded rockery, or it can be used as ground cover in a shrub border.
Mukdenia rossii 'Crimson Fans', sometimes marketed under the name 'Karasuba', is a plant of the saxifrage family, native to northern China, including Manchuria, and Korea. This perennial has a large, fleshy, brownish rhizome. It forms a compact herbaceous, open clump 35 cm (14in) tall and 50 cm (20in) wide, composed of deciduous leaves that disappear quite early in late summer. These leaves are initially acidic green, often tinged with bronze and red during bud break. It is the summer heat that changes the foliage coloration, with a gradually invading reddish-purple border that eventually covers the entire leaf in autumn before it disappears. The leaves can be very large, up to 13 cm (5in) in diameter, are strongly lobed and palmate and have an irregularly toothed margin. The flowers emerge in March-April, before the foliage, with thick, reddish, and hairy stems, bearing light panicles 14 cm (6in) long. The rose-greenish and hairy flower buds open into small fleshy, semi-double flowers, with 12 white-greenish petals and 6 brown-pink stamens, followed by fruits called capsules.
Mukdenia rossi Crimson Fans is an ideal plant for damp woodlands, shrub borders, mixed borders, or moist, shady rockeries. It can be paired with hostas, ferns, Japanese anemones, and bleeding hearts, which thrive in similar environments. It will look stunning planted with 'Hakonechloa macra Alboaurea', a small golden grass. Plant at the base of shrubs like hydrangeas and fuchsias, always in moist soil.

Planting and care
Formerly named Aceriphyllium, this small genus has few species but is very useful for shady, cool and moist gardens, in any humus-rich soil, even clayey as long as it is well-drained and well-dug, without limestone. Mukdenia rossii 'Crimson Fans' is hardy and can even be grown in occasionally wet soil, always in the shade.
This perennial is best planted in spring or autumn in light and moist soil in a semi-shaded position with a spacing of 35 cm (14in). In full sun, keep the soil moist. It does not tolerate summer heat at all, even though it contributes to the purplish colour of its foliage, so make sure to water it well. In autumn, mulch the base and mark the location to avoid damaging the flower buds that are close to the ground.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
