Planting and care
The agapanthus ‘Sunfield’ is preferably planted in spring, after the hard frosts have passed. Planting in September or October is also possible in Mediterranean regions and along the Atlantic coast. Cover the stump with 5 to 10 cm of soil and space the young plants 50 to 60 cm apart.
Choose a sunny position, sheltered from cold winds if possible. The soil should be fertile, deep and well drained, while retaining a little moisture during the growth and flowering period. This agapanthus tolerates acid, neutral or calcareous soils. In heavy soil, improve drainage with gravel or coarse sand.
Water regularly during the first two summers, then during dry spells to support late flowering. In pots, watering should be more frequent and supplemented with a potash-rich fertiliser in spring. Protect the stump with a dry mulch in cold regions and overwinter the pots in cold regions. Remove dry leaves in late winter and divide overcrowded clumps in spring every three or four years.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
