Description
Asarum splendens is a mountain perennial ground cover sought after for its decorative evergreen foliage. Resembling the leaves of Cyclamen hederifolium, they are oblong and rounded, dark green, widely marbled and veined with silver. Close to the ground, the dark purple flowers appear partially hidden under the foliage between March and May. Reaching just over 15 cm (6 in) in height, it makes an excellent ground cover.
Native to China, Asarum splendens belongs to the Aristolochiaceae family. Although known as Chinese Wild Ginger, it is not part of the Zingiberaceae family. A woodland plant, Asarum splendens appreciates shaded exposures and fresh, well-drained humus-bearing soils and pairs well with other shade perennials or ferns. Very hardy, its foliage remains evergreen even at very low temperatures.

Plant Asarum splendens in shade or partial shade in light, humus-rich soil that stays moist in summer. These very easy plants have no specific requirements and are cold-resistant. Just make sure to water them regularly during the first year of growth, especially during dry periods, to promote their establishment. Able to tolerate root competition, it can be planted at the base of spring-blooming shrubs. Protect the stump with dead leaves in cold regions.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
