Planted in the autumn, the young plant did not survive the challenges of a winter with unexpected temperature variations.

Description

Aster cordifolius 'Photograph', also known as Symphyotrichum 'Photograph', is covered in small pale-lavender flowers with purple anthers from September until the first frost. Asters are essential in our gardens.

This hardy perennial forms a well-branched bushy clump, 1m (3ft) tall. It develops deciduous, simple, lanceolate, toothed, green leaves, 12cm (5in) long. The tiny pale-lavender flowers with purple anthers are grouped in bouquets. They grow on branching and smooth stems. The flowers are ideal for creating a floral arrangement in a vase.

Easy to grow, Aster cordifolius 'Photograph' likes a consistent, calcareous, well-drained, not too poor soil that is moist in summer. It prefers a sunny location. This variety tolerates light shade well. Divide the clumps if necessary in early spring.

Aster cordifolius 'Photograph' is used in borders or to dress a fence, combined with anemones and heleniums. It also ideal for making bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn, with a spacing of 40cm (16in), in good garden soil. Stake and apply flower fertiliser in spring. To limit height, you can pinch out the shoots in April/May. Water well in summer. Cut back to ground level after the first frost. Divide every 3/5 years in spring to prevent thinning. Watch out for snails and slugs, as well as fungal diseases.
