Description

Aster frikartii 'Wunder Von Stäfa' is a perennial plant similar to the Aster frickartii 'Mönch' in terms of its habit and foliage. It differs from the latter with its light blue flowering. Ideal for filling pots, beds and mixed borders with blooms.

Aster frikartii 'Wunder Von Stäfa' reaches a height of 60 cm (24in) to 1 m (3ft) with a spread of 50 cm (20in) depending on the type of soil. Its medium green leaves are ovate in shape and coarsely dentate on the margin. From August to September a multitude of light blue flowers with yellow centres, measuring 1 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, appear along relatively flexible stems for a large autumn aster.

Very hardy (from -20°C (1°F) to -25°C (1°F)), it pairs well with grasses, salvias, and nepetas. Easy to grow, it tolerates all types of soil. Avoid excessive watering. It enjoys a sunny or partially shaded site.

Planting and care

Ideally plant your Aster x frikartii 'Wunder von Stäfa' in autumn or spring. Choose a sunny or partially shaded site; asters in general do not appreciate shade and need brightness to flower well. To prevent the stems from bending, find a spot sheltered from strong winds e.g. near a hedge or wall. The type of soil doesn't matter much as long as you ensure good drainage by adding some gravel at the time of planting. Remember to keep the base of your perennials moist by mulching flowerbeds from June onwards, which will make the flowering of your aster even more beautiful at the end of summer.
