Astilbe Deutschland

Astilbe japonica 'Deutschland' is an early flowering Japanese hybrid. From June, its pure white flowers are gathered in short, well-branched, dense panicles that illuminate the surroundings of water features, shady gardens, wet areas or a large pot kept moist on the terrace. Its feathery panicles are very attractive as cut flowers or in dried bouquets. The foliage takes on lovely autumnal hues. 

Astilbe 'Deutchland' is a rhizomatous perennial plant with a low and compact shape from spring, with deciduous, dense and glossy compound foliage, with toothed, dark green leaflets. It will reach 50 cm (20in) high when in flower and spread over 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in). This long-lived plant belongs to the saxifrage family. It is one of many hybrids whose species is native to the Japanese archipelago.

Plant Astilbe japonica in moist to wet, rich, neutral to acidic soil. This hybrid does not tolerate drought, or being flooded in winter. The plant adapts well to clay soils if they are healthy and fertile. Place Astilbe japonica in partial shade or in a sunny but not scorching position. In the wild, these plants grow in moist woodlands. Daily watering will be necessary in hot summers.

Astilbe japonica can easily be grown in containers, in flower beds, in woodland, as a border or used as cut flowers and dried flowers. Combine them with Hostas, Ferns (Athyrium filix-femina), Arums, Cape Fuchsias (Schizostylis coccinea) and Meadowsweets (Filipendula) or other wet soil perennials.
