Our range of Ballota. Ballota, mostly known as Ballota pseudodictamnus, is a hardy perennial plant appreciated for its aromatic foliage and drought resistance. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family, just like sage and lavender. This plant has velvety foliage, usually grey-green, tightly packed on square-sectioned stems. Ballota is often cultivated for its decorative appearance and its ability to repel certain harmful insects through its strongly scented leaves. In addition to Ballota pseudodictamnus, there are a few species cultivated in gardens, including Ballota hirsuta, which is more compact and dense, and Ballota nigra, or Black Ballote, with broader leaves and violet flowers.

The genus Ballota comprises approximately 35 to 40 species. These plants are mainly native to Mediterranean regions, although some species are also found in Western Asia and North Africa. Their distribution reflects an adaptation to the hot and dry climates of these areas.

Ballota is an ideal plant for poor, rocky, or sandy soils in full sun. This perennial shows great resistance to diseases. Used as an ornamental plant, it is sometimes employed in traditional medicine for its sedative properties.
