three miserable plants, one of which is almost without a root system. Certainly on sale, but it's not worth much. We can ask for a refund later (but in such cases, we are almost certain of the result), but the credit is always less than the free shipping we receive every time for a future order, so we can never accumulate or use it.

Description

Delphinium Astolat Group or larkspur is a large perennial variety that offers magnificent 1-metre (3 feet) tall inflorescences in summer, a particularly romantic lilac-pink to mauve colour, rarely seen in these hybrids and adorned with a large matching collar at the centre. Stunning and spectacular in the back of borders, it requires staking. These plants thrive in sunny, rich, deep, and well-drained soils.

Delphinium Astolat Group is one of the many hybrids obtained from cross-breeding D. elatum, which has given rise to the famous "Pacific Giant" series. It is a tall herbaceous perennial with a short lifespan but rapid growth. It forms a clump of finely dissected palmate, tender green leaves, from which tall flower spikes measuring 1m (3ft) to 1.20m (4ft) in height on numerous stems reaching 1.8m (6ft) to 2m (7ft) emerge. The main flowering occurs in June and repeats in September, if the stems are cut back as they fade, and is attractive to pollinating insects. The flowers are single or semi-double, cup-shaped, arranged on sturdy upright spikes. They have lavender-pink, mauve, or old rose petals, surrounding a beautiful collar or 'bee' in white or pink. The plant develops from a woody rhizome that sinks into the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of Delphiniums always adds dimension, height, and charm to perennial borders. They make great companions for moss or Gallica roses, creating charming and romantic displays. Another beautiful combination can be achieved with pink daylilies, mauve or blue paniculate phlox, and baby's breath Rosenschleier. This variety should be carefully staked or supported by tall perennials or flowering bushes. Its flowers hold up well and are particularly appreciated in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are cut short to promote better branching and achieve optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transportation.

Planting and care

Plant them in spring after the last frosts, in a sunny position, in moist, rich, well-drained soil, leaving a minimum of two or three shoots on young plants and five to seven on well-established delphiniums. During growth, water once or twice a week and apply liquid fertilizer every two or three weeks. Remove faded flowers by cutting the spikes at the level of the small lateral flowering shoots. Cut back the entire plant to ground level in autumn.

Tip: Dare to go tall with these giant plants that structure and balance the garden. The tallest ones will add volume and lightness against a dark background of hedges or conifers. Medium-sized ones will dress up tall flower beds, such as those with giant dahlias. Take care of the vegetation through regular watering. Watch out for slugs and snails.
