The photos are beautiful, but the plant received is absolutely disappointing. It's a shame to ship this kind of genus. Really very disappointed, and we are stopping all purchases on this site.

Description

Delphinium 'Flamenco', just like its brothers Cha Cha and Sweet Sensation, is a bushy perennial delphinium that doesn't require staking and produces many very double, even triple, flowers throughout the summer. This new delphinium produces flower spikes loaded with large, fringed and frilly, perfectly arranged double flowers in rich purplish-red. Its flowers are remarkable in bouquets and truly majestic in borders or containers.

This recently obtained Delphinium Flamenco, from the highlander series, named after the famous mountainous and wild region of Scotland, is a member of the ranunculus family. It is derived from Delphinium elatum, the tall delphinium, which is found in cool meadows at high altitudes throughout the European Alps, as well as in southern Europe, central and eastern Europe, Siberia, Mongolia, and China. This plant has given rise to the famous "Pacific Giant" series, among others.

The 'Flamenco' variety forms a sturdy, short-lived herbaceous perennial plant with rapid growth. It forms a clump of deeply divided, tender green palmate leaves, reaching 45-55 cm (18-22in) high, from which flower spikes 70-80 cm (28-32in) emerge in summer. Flowering begins in June and continues regularly until the first frost, provided the faded spikes are removed. It is loved by pollinating insects. The densely packed flowers are composed of 40 to 60 small incurved, overlapping petals, arranged in several ranks. The flowers are tightly held on strong stems, coping with wind and rain. Their colour is a rare shade between purple and wine red, with violet highlights. The plant develops from a woody rootstock that vertically penetrates the soil.

The characteristic silhouette of delphiniums adds volume, height, and charm to perennial borders, similar to hollyhocks. They make great companions for moss or Gallic roses, creating charming and romantic displays. A beautiful combination can be achieved with echinaceas, mauve, white or pink paniculate phlox, and baby's breath Rosenschleier. This modest-sized variety can be supported by small flowering bushes or tall perennials, such as Escallonia, dwarf buddleias, dwarf lilacs, peonies, shrubby mallows, and perennial chrysanthemums in borders. Its flowers hold up well in bouquets.

Note: From March to September, the stems of our delphiniums are pruned short to promote better branching from the crown and achieve optimal rooting. This also prevents the stems from breaking during transport.

Planting and care

'Highlander' Delphiniums, selected under the harsh Scottish climate, are not difficult to grow but still require some precautions: delphiniums dislike heavy, compact, and wet or dry and poor soils. The soil that suits them is deep and fertile soil, rich in humus, non-compact, moist, even in summer, but without excess wet in winter, and sheltered from strong winds. Under these conditions, they will live for many years. Beware of slugs and snails that can cause damage at the beginning of growth. Full sun will limit the risk of mildew. As a precaution in windy regions, install tall stakes around the base, depending on the size of the variety.
