Description

Dicentra or Bleeding Heart 'Pink Diamonds' blooms in two shades of pink on an elegant, finely cut, blue-greenish-grey foliage. It is an alpine plant that prefers a well-drained soil and thrives in sunlight. It does not like deep and clay soils, although it prefers a moist soil.  It flowers from spring to the end of summer. The flowers of this Bleeding Heart create a charming bicolour effect, in soft pink and medium pink tones. It grows well in a pot.

Bleeding Heart 'Pink Diamonds' belongs to the Papaveraceae (Fumariaceae) family. It originates from mountain areas. Slow-growing, it reaches a height of 35 cm (14in) and a spread of 45 cm (18in) at maturity. The plant forms a compact and dense clump. The foliage, deciduous in winter, resembles that of Absinthe. It has a very soft grey-greenish-blue colour foliage that appears powdery. Finely cut, it also resembles ferns or chervil leaves. The remarkably long flowering period begins in April-May and lasts until September-October. The flowers, resembling small hearts, open in soft pink and evolve into a bicoloured flower with the addition of a deeper pink tone. They gracefully hang along the arching stems. Bleeding Heart 'Pink Diamonds' spreads by trailing rhizomes, allowing it to naturalise if conditions are favourable.

Plant Dicentra 'Pink Diamonds' in full sun or partial shade, in a well-drained soil, moist to dry in summer, neutral to acidic. Keep the soil slightly moist in summer to encourage more flowers. Remove dead foliage from the plant in spring.  In rock gardens, borders, or containers, plant this Dicentra with ornamental garlic such as Allium caesium, Phlox, or Columbines.

Attention: The Bleeding Heart is potentially toxic.
Most Bleeding Hearts go dormant at the end of spring, but this does not have any negative effects on plant growth.
