Our range of Dietes. These are evergreen perennials, not very hardy, used in borders, which flowering resembles irises. The best known, Dietes grandiflora, nicknamed the fairy iris, offers large white flowers enhanced with yellow and purple, carried above a vigorous, dense, and arching clump.

Dietes bicolor, the Spanish iris or wild yellow iris, with pale yellow flowers with brown macules, integrates easily into a Mediterranean scene and grows very well in a pot on a terrace, to be stored away in winter. The cultivar 'Milky Way' offers a more discreet white flowering but stands out for its cream-variegated foliage; it is appreciated in mild climates where its evergreen foliage remains attractive for a good part of the winter.

Dietes belong to the Iridaceae family; they are rhizomatous perennials originating mainly from southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho). They require a sunny position and very well-drained soil. Their cold resistance is limited (-5 to -8°C): they tolerate frost better when the soil is dry but need water to flower between May and August.
