Double-flowered coneflowers, or those with double blooms, are characterised by their very full, pom-pom-shaped heads, surrounded by more or less trailing ligules or petals. These hardy perennials bloom for several weeks in summer and attract pollinating insects to borders. Easy to grow in the garden or in pots.

Double varieties offer rounder, more intricate flowers than classic coneflowers. Echinacea purpurea 'Pink Double Delight' bears bright pink, very double flowers with a ruffled pom-pom centre. 'Butterfly Kisses' is more compact, a lovely plant for borders and balconies, with its soft pink flowers and darker centres. The creamy white 'Milkshake' coneflower is interesting near grasses and blue flowers. 'Irresistible' produces double orange flowers, while 'Secret Glow' forms golden-yellow to orange-yellow pom-poms, visible from afar in summer borders.

Double coneflowers should be placed near perennials with simpler forms: rudbeckias, agastaches, yarrows or paniculate phlox. Their very full pom-poms contrast with the spikes, flat umbels and large daisies of these sun-loving plants. Our guide "How to plant Echinaceas" reminds you of the key points for successful cultivation: a sunny position, rich, well-drained soil and regular watering at the start.
