All Our Echinocactus Varieties. These sculptural, globose cacti are best known through the iconic Echinocactus grusonii, nicknamed "Mother-in-law's Cushion". Recognisable by its perfectly spherical shape, deep ribs and long golden thorns, it's appreciated both for its aesthetics and ease of care. It's grown in pots on sunny terraces or in dry rock gardens on the Mediterranean coast.
The variety var. brevispinus differs with shorter, less sharp thorns, making it easier to handle. Echinocactus grusonii var. albispinus is a particularly luminous form covered in white thorns.
The "mother-in-law's cushion" is frost-sensitive: it's therefore preferable to grow it in pots and bring it indoors once temperatures drop below 5°C. Echinocactus require very sunny exposure, a highly draining mineral substrate, and spaced watering during the growing season. In winter, the plant must be kept completely dry to avoid rot risks.
