Superb ground cover, with beautiful foliage, equally beautiful at the base of an oak tree or in full sun. The light flowers are very elegant.

Description
Epimedium versicolor 'Sulphureum' is a hardy understorey shrub that thrives in shady situations. Epimedium is adorned with beautiful copper-colored foliage in spring, green in summer, and a lovely purple hue in winter. It produces charming panicles of small sulphur-yellow flowers with cream sepals in spring. Its spreading habit makes it perfect groundcover for shade or partial shade, under large trees, on the edge of woodlands, or in a rockery.
Epimedium versicolor 'Sulphureum' belongs to the Berberidaceae family, like Mahonias. It is a rhizomatous plant that takes its time to establish well, but once in place, it forms beautiful carpets with loose tufted growth, reaching a height of about 40 cm (16in) and the same in width. Its evergreen foliage is composed of heart-shaped, dentate leaves that are copper-coloured in spring, green in summer, and beautifully purple with the onset of winter cold. Epimedium versicolor 'Sulphureum' produces delicate and elegant flowers in April-May, which appear in panicles of sulphur-yellow flowers with cream sepals. Its growth will be faster and more vigorous in humus-rich and moist soil, but it also adapts to drier conditions.
The Epimedium 'Sulphureum' thrives in damp shade and tolerates competition from other plants' root systems as long as the soil is not too dry in summer. It is a plant for light woodlands and is hardy to -20°C (-4°F). It particularly appreciates humus-rich soils but adapts to almost any ordinary soil. Epimedium 'Sulphureum' is a plant which effectively covers and flowers in dark areas, accompanied by astilbes, Arisaema, Bleeding Hearts, Ferns, Hostas, Foxgloves, Primula vialii, and sweet woodruff. It will create a superb light shade border in damp soil. You can also plant this vareity with other species and cultivars of Epimediums to vary the colours of the foliage and flowers.

Planting and care
Epimedium Sulphureum thrives in cool conditions, so you should plant it in shade or partial shade, ideally in soil with a neutral pH (neither too acidic nor too alkaline), light, and well-drained.
A plant of undergrowth, it particularly appreciates humus-rich soils, so an annual addition of compost will be welcome. However, this plant easily adapts to any type of properly drained and cultivated ordinary soil.
Once established, which often takes a little time and requires protection from adventive plants and following watering instructions during the first year, Epimedium can withstand temporary drought. Its maintenance consists of removing the withered foliage from the previous year before the flowers appear, typically at the end of winter.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
