Description
Euphorbia amygdaloïdes 'Frosted Flame' is a unique variety of Wood Spurge. Its evergreen foliage offers a rare colour palette: a grey-green irregularly variegated with cream-white and splashed with pink-red, it turns to dark red-pink in autumn as the cold approaches. It is appreciated because it acclimates well under the dry shade of trees and is, therefore, suitable for woodland areas. Its spring flowering displays vibrant and striking shades: a very intense lime-green accentuated by fused bracts forming a complete disc. Foliage and flowering in this variety brighten up corners of the garden. It also grows in full sun and well-drained and deep soil.
With 2000 species, Euphorbias are numerous and diverse in their characteristics. They have given their name to the Euphorbiaceae family. Their common feature is foliage and flowering, which are always very decorative. Their upright stems originate from the base and form a bushy tuft, spreading and smaller than the Wood Spurge. They bear numerous obovate leaves measuring 3 to 8 cm (1 to 3in) long. In "Frosted Flame", the leaves are highly variegated, crowned with inflorescences. These are grouped in cymes measuring 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in height and covered with numerous small cyathia (this name is mainly attributed to Euphorbias). Don't hesitate to observe them closely, they are very delicate with their bracts resembling collars. This variety reaches a height and width of 40 cm (16in) at maturity and flowers from March to May.
Euphorbias are essential in flower beds: a beautiful silhouette, long-lasting foliage, and brightly coloured flowers. Euphorbia amygdaloïdes 'Frosted Flame' brings all its luminosity to woodland areas alongside Heucheras or contrasting Hostas, Lamiums, and Epimediums. It is also ideally suited for container gardening or in pots on a patio. As a small-sized plant, it also finds its place in a rockery or slope. It tolerates summer drought and adapts to different types of soils, although it prefers humus-rich and moist soils.
The only downside is that their sap contains irritating and toxic latex. Always remember to handle them with gloves, keep an eye on children playing nearby, and warn them.

Planting and care
Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Frosted Flame' is a perfectly hardy perennial plan that is easy to grow and well suited to beginner gardeners. It is very undemanding and resistant to drought, and it appreciates a sunny or semi-shaded location and light and humus-rich soil. Still, it can also thrive in ordinary, even poor, heavy or chalky soil, from moist to dry. Always wear gloves when handling these plants, especially when pruning, as the milky juice that flows from its stems is toxic and irritating to the skin.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
