The spike is very beautiful at ripeness and deserves a place in any garden. Out of the 20 young plants ordered, this variety received was not very well rooted and would have deserved a good month more in the nursery. With very small roots, the bucket was filled to 30%, despite that it seems to be doing well, we'll see over time.

Description

The Euphorbia polychroma 'Purpurea' is a perennial Mediterranean plant with green-purple foliage and yellow-green flowers.

This Euphorbia can reach a height of 40 cm (16in) with a cushion-like habit. The small flowers, surrounded by very bright yellow-green bracts, are carried by sturdy purple-coloued stems. The numerous flowers appear in April - May. The foliage is slightly villous and green-purple in color.

This perennial is planted in spring or autumn in a light soil. It is used as a border or in flowerbeds, in sunny or semi-shady positions.

Our advice is to pair it with brightly colored tulips to add contrast to your flowerbeds.

Planting and care

Plant Euphorbia polychroma 'Purpurea' in full sun or partially shaded areas with a moist, well-drained or even poor and rocky soil. It is best planted in the heart of spring (April-May) or early autumn. This Euphorbia tolerates sunlight and drought well and does not have any particular requirements. However, it is sensitive to excessive water, so if your soil is heavy and compact, lighten it with gravel or coarse sand to prevent water stagnation. You can also plant the seedlings on a slope or near a wall, which promotes water drainage. Euphorbias do not tolerate being moved, as their roots are sensitive to injury. Additionally, when the Euphorbia is thriving in a location, it tends to spread easily. Reduce the runners (those with rhizomes) by cutting them cleanly with a spade. Handle Euphorbias with caution: the latex that oozes from them can irritate the skin and cause inflammation. Mulch around the stumps with gravel to limit weed growth and soil compaction due to precipitation. Trim the floral stems once the inflorescences have completely withered to avoid contact with the latex. Winter pruning does not pose a problem as the sap flow is minimal.
