Our Ferocactus Range. These globose to cylindrical cacti are nicknamed "barrel cactus". Like Ferocactus stainesii, they are armed with spectacular thorns, often curved and hooked. Ferocactus glaucescens, slightly columnar with bluish hues and red thorns, can withstand short frosts if planted in very well-drained soil: it's one of the few that can be planted in a Mediterranean rock garden. Its "Inermis" form, without thorns, can be safely placed near walkways. Ferocactus horridus, with its compact habit and curved thorns, and Ferocactus robustus, often wider than tall, are well-suited for container growing, to be overwintered frost-free. Species like Ferocactus pilosus, with its columnar silhouette and long red thorns, or Ferocactus emoryi, with imposing dimensions, must be overwintered frost-free.
Ferocactus appreciate very sunny exposures and a very well-draining, poor, gravelly substrate. As arid climate plants, they are very sensitive to winter moisture. In pots, bring them indoors as soon as temperatures drop below 5°C. In the ground, only the hardier specimens can remain outside, in perfectly drained, even stony soil.
