Description

The Perennial Geranium pratense 'Galactic', also known as 'Galactic' meadow geranium, offers pure white flowers with excellent durability. Its corollas are finely veined with translucent silver. It blooms from June to August, forming a lavish and flowery dome. Its large foliage is already a decoration, becoming magnificent when it turns bronze in autumn. It is a plant with a rustic character, a robust perennial for all gardens, in cool and rich soil.

Geranium pratense f.albiflorum 'Galactic' belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is an albino form of the meadow geranium, which is found over a vast territory, from western Europe to western China. This robust species is found in wet meadows, along roadsides, and in mown meadows. 'Galactic' has a bushy tufted habit, reaching a height and width of 80 cm (32in), with rapid growth. It flowers from June to August, at the top of branched stems, and often blooms again in September. Its flowers, with a diameter of 30 to 35 mm (1in), are pure white, greener towards the center, and marked with fine translucent and speckled veins, with pale yellow anthers blending well in the heart of the flower. The foliage is deciduous, composed of large polygonal, lobed and dentate leaves, medium green, measuring 20 cm (8in) long, almost all along the robust and villous stems. The foliage takes on a lovely hue in autumn.

Like many other species of perennial geraniums, Geranium pratense and its varieties thrive in a nature-friendly garden and are superb plants that provide nectar and pollen for numerous insects such as butterflies, bees, bumblebees, etc. It is a tall plant ideal for a cottage garden, in flower beds, along pathways, on slopes, in a flowery meadow. For example, pair it with the clematis 'Hagley Hybrid', which has large pink flowers and blooms alongside it.

Planting and care

In nature, Geranium pratense thrives in woods and on hillsides in areas with annual mowing. It prefers a sunny exposure and a fresh, rich, rather chalky soil. In very heavy soil, mix leaf compost with garden soil. In a dry environment, it is more susceptible to powdery mildew. It tolerates partial shade well, although it will be less floriferous. After flowering, it is advisable to cut back the stems and leaves to ground level to prevent excessive self-seeding and to promote new foliage or even a new flowering in autumn.
