Description

Deciduous, perennial, bushy plant, the Geranium sanguineum Elke spreads slowly but surely! Perennial geraniums are good ground cover plants highly appreciated for their easiness of cultivation, as well as the abundance and duration of their flowering.

In early summer, it bears large, deep pink flowers, with purple stripes and slightly edged in white. Its floriferous stems continue to grow after flowering. The cup-shaped flowers measure 4 cm (2in) in diameter. Its foliage, deciduous, very dense, is deeply incised. The name "sanguineum" is dedicated to its apple green foliage, which changes color at the end of the season to become yellow-orange with red hues. This coloring intensifies in autumn as the temperature range increases.

A beautiful border plant, Geranium sanguineum 'Elke' grows in well-drained soil and in the sun.

Planting and care

To install your 'Elke' Bloodroot Geranium, work the soil to a depth of 20 cubic cm, crumble the soil well and place an amendment such as dried blood or bone meal at the bottom of the planting hole. Position your plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, it is necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate root development.
