Description

A deciduous perennial plant, Geranium sanguineum striatum spread slowly but surely.

In early summer, it bears large light pink flowers with purple streaks. Its floriferous stems continue to grow after flowering. The cup-shaped flowers measure 4 cm (2in) in diameter. Its foliage, deciduous and very abundant, is deeply incised. The name 'sanguineum' is because to its apple green foliage, which changes colour towards the end of the season to become yellow-orange with blood-red hues. These colours intensify in autumn with the change of temperature.

A beautiful border plant, Geranium sanguineum striatum grows in well-drained soil and in the sun.

Planting and care

To plant your Geranium sanguineum var. striatum, prepare the soil to a depth of 20 cubic cm, crumbling the soil well.  Add a fertiliser to the base of the hole such as bonemeal.  Position your plant, removed from its pot, by covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. In dry weather, it will be necessary to water regularly for a few weeks to help the plant to establish.
