Geranium psilostemon (synonym Geranium armenum), or Armenian geranium, is part of the large tribe of perennial geraniums. It is undoubtedly the most colourful of all, with its flowers of insolent magenta red adorned with veins and a black heart. This vigorous species, native to Turkey and the Caucasus, has produced excellent varieties and hybrids, such as 'Bressingham Flair', 'Ann Folkard'or 'Patricia', widely planted in our gardens. It is also renowned for its abundant flowering, great robustness and versatility. In nature it is a tall plant that can reach nearly a metre in height over time. In early spring, its bright red buds emerge from the ground, then the plant shoots up and forms a dome of luxuriant foliage gradually expanding until flowering, which occurs from June to August. Its large deeply cut leaves often take on beautiful flamboyant colours in autumn. Geranium psilostemon is a wonderful plant for flower beds and cool slopes in cottage gardens.
