Description
Helianthemum apenninum, also known as the Apennine rockrose or white rockrose, is a perennial shrub native to the Mediterranean basin, particularly drought-resistant. It has given rise to numerous cultivars through hybridization with Helianthemum nummularium. Its delicate and silvery foliage is adorned with a profusion of cup-shaped white flowers with bright yellow throats in spring or summer. This wild rock rose naturally thrives in rockeries or gravel beds, in well-drained soil. It is particularly well-suited for ornamental purposes in dry gardens.
Belonging to the family of Cistaceae, the rockrose is related to the Cistus genus. Helianthemum apenninum is naturally found in the northern Mediterranean basin, west of North Africa and south of the Alps. This plant grows in limestone, rocky, and soils that are very dry in summer. It is a herbaceous plant with a woody base that forms a spreading, loosely branched tuft, about 25 cm (10 in) high and 30 cm (12 in) wide. Its evergreen foliage consists of tiny narrow leaves, rolled at the edges and covered with silvery bristles. Flowering occurs in April-May in southern regions, and in June-July further north. The plant produces numerous small flowers, about 3-4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter, in cup-shaped clusters. Each flower has 5 pure white petals with a golden yellow base, surrounding a cluster of stamens of the same golden yellow colour.
The Greek name Helianthemum means "flower of the sun," an appropriate name for these flowers that only open in bright sunlight. Its delicate flowers last only a few hours, but they keep blooming over a long period of time.
Helianthemum apenninum is the ideal plant to enhance a rocky garden or sunny slope, to cascade over a wall, or brighten up paving. It will also look beautiful in the foreground of perennial beds or raised flower beds. It is perfect for creating green walls and green roofs. It can be combined with many other rock plants (Erigeron, Alyssum, Rock cress, Aubrieta), as well as perennial plants such as Lavender, German Iris, Cistus, Convolvulus cneorum, Coreopsis. Its flowers blend delicately with the greay foliage of Stachys, artemisias, santolines or silver baskets.

Planting and care
Helianthemum apenninum should be planted in full sun, in a neutral or calcareous soil, perfectly drained, rich in stones, gravel or sand. Not tolerating stagnant moisture in winter, it will be necessary - especially in cold and wet climates - to lighten the soil during planting by adding gravel and sand to improve drainage. The Apennine Rockrose is a moderately hardy plant that can withstand temperatures between -12 and -14°C (10.4 and 6.8 °F) at the extreme, if in a perfectly drained soil. However, this species is perfectly adapted to long dry summers. The plant only requires regular and moderate watering in the first year after planting; afterwards, it can manage on its own. A light trimming of the clump, using hedge shears, can be done after flowering to maintain a dense vegetation and prevent the centre from becoming bare.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
