Oats are well known as an annual grass called Avena sativa, grown as a green manure in the vegetable garden, or on a large scale for its nutrient-rich seeds, oat flakes. For ornamental gardens, there are also very decorative perennial oats, such as the blue oat (Helictotrichon sempervirens), with evergreen foliage of a metallic blue colour, the Necklace Oat (Arrhenatherum bulbosum 'Variegatum') forming bright tufts, and the fragrant oat (Hierochloe odorata), appreciated for its beautiful vanilla fragrance. Perennial oats are hardy grasses, more or less trailing depending on the species, whose soil requirements depend on their geographical origin. Stunning in contemporary or countryside settings, it can be advantageous to grow them in a large pot: they will structure the terrace decor with as much elegance as a small bush!
