Description

Hellebore lividus is a perennial herbaceous plant forming a compact clump. It is a little-known variety that takes time to establish. Its long smooth purple-green stems bear charming flowers from February to March. This flowering is composed of clusters of 5 to 10 flowers that open into trailing bell-shaped blossoms. The flowers, measuring 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, are composed of 5 purple-pink petals on the reverse side and green on the inside with numerous green stamens.

This Hellebore has shiny dark green evergreen leaves with whitish midribs 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10in) long, composed of 3 elliptical (oval-shaped) and smooth leaflets. It is not very hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -8°C (17.6°F). Reaching a height of up to 45 cm (18in), Helleborus lividus is native to Majorca.

It is an ideal species to place among bushes. Its foliage structures flower beds. Place it next to deciduous species. It can also be grown in pots and placed in a veranda or cold greenhouse during winter. It pairs well with spring bulbs such as daffodils, fritillaries, or iris reticulata. You can also plant it with ferns and euphorbias. Hellebores are toxic, so they should be handled with caution.

Planting and care

Hellebore lividus likes semi-shaded areas, sheltered from cold drafts. Plant it in fertile, moist but well-drained and fairly rich soil. It tolerates short periods of drought and can withstand limestone. You can add good compost or leaf compost to help it establish. Mulch every year in autumn. Hellebore doesn't like excessive water so improve soil drainage with gravel if necessary. Remove faded flowers if you don't want seeds. This perennial can be prone to aphids. If the soil is not well-drained enough, black spots may appear and cause the foliage to dry out. To make them disappear, simply improve the drainage.
