More information

A variety close to Macy Marble with white petals with light yellow reflections, edged with a soft pink, less intense than Macy. For the rest, same compact, robust plant, very floriferous and really easy to grow in any climate and in any soil, even quite dry. Its large, fully open flowers bloom from December to April, on tough, dentate, shiny dark green, marbled with light green evergreen foliage. It is an excellent perennial garden plant that will live for many years without maintenance. It also grows very well in pots.

Description

Hellebore Ice 'N' Roses Marbled Maddy Marble is similar to Macy Marble but milder. This Christmas rose with exceptional qualities is a recent hybrid, obtained in Germany and appeared in 2017. It combines all the qualities of its parents, including H. corsicus, H. niger, and H. orientalis. Very robust, it is resistant to cold, heat, and rather dry soils in summer. It flowers for a long time, between December and April, with large flowers in dense colours. It produces up to 15 stalks per plant, each developing several flowers on compact stems. This one expresses itself in white petals, with light yellow reflections, edged with a soft slightly purplish pink and awakened by yellow stamens. Its highly ornamental foliage is dark green, marbled with light green, strongly dentate, dark, and leathery. This hellebore will live for many years in the garden, in all climates.

Hellebores belong to the family of Ranunculaceae. Helleborus x glandorfensis Ice 'N' Roses® is a complex horticultural hybrid belonging to a series of Christmas roses developed in Germany, after many years of research and drastic selection. The flowers of Ice n'Roses hellebores come in 3 colours: red, pink, and white.

Ice 'N' Roses Marbled Maddy Marble is a sturdy perennial, with remarkable longevity, fairly fast-growing, and with vigorous vegetation, but sterile; its reproduction is possible (and delicate) only by division of clumps. It has a bushy habit, with a mature plant reaching 30cm (12in) in height and a minimum of 50cm (20in) in spread. From December to March-April, appear rather low brownish stems carrying white-pink buds that open into flowers with 5 white petals, modestly edged with pink, with a satin texture, 6-7cm (2-3in) wide, with beautiful yellow stamens in their centre. The evergreen foliage consists of fairly leathery leaves, 10 to 30cm (4 to 12in) long, borne by brownish petioles. They are divided into 5 to 7 ovate or lanceolate segments, strongly dentate, dark green with a satin finish, marbled with light green. This Hellebore is hardy up to -20°C (-4°F) and tolerates a wide range of very diverse soils, whether they are limestone or clayey, humiferous or sandy, constantly moist or even dry in summer.

This rather revolutionary hellebore is full of qualities. It should thrive in all our gardens, from the north to the south. From the first year, many flowers already appear on the plants. New flowers constantly form, creating a beautiful contrast between the open flowers and the faded ones. These flowers can be perfectly used in bouquets. It is also a good ground cover for partially shaded areas of the garden. Use hellebores with understorey plants with brighter colours. They are nicely highlighted when planted near evergreen bushes of modest size (Mahonia 'Apollo', Nandina 'Fire Power') and under conifers (especially in windy locations). Surround them with primroses, wood anemones, Corydalis, Dicentras, cardamines, or spring-flowering bulbs, and snowdrops. You can also plant them in groups, like a bouquet, near the entrance of the house, in a shaded position, to fully enjoy their early flowering. They are suitable for flower beds, borders, and containers. Over time, the flowers of the Hellebore do not wilt like the majority of other flowers, but dry up.

Planting and care

The HGC Ice 'N' Roses hellebore is not demanding on the nature of the soil: it tolerates limestone and fairly dry soils in summer, as well as clayey and fresh soils. However, it particularly appreciates rich, rather heavy and well-worked soils. Plant it in partial clear shade in fertile soil, enriched with leaf soil, kept moist to help it establish. Incorporate good compost at planting. Hellebores do not like stagnant water that can rot its roots. Planting under the clear shade of large leafy plants is perfect. These perennials are easy to care for, but should not be stressed or disturbed. They have a reputation for being homebodies: once well established, they do not like to be transplanted. Young plants can take 2 to 3 years to bloom, sometimes more, but afterwards, there will be no more problems. Over the weeks, their color darkens, but they do not fade like most flowers, they rather dry up.

On a balcony or terrace, plant them in pots 4 to 5 times larger than them, as they need space to develop their root system. Very hardy, most hellebores can withstand negative temperatures down to -15°C (5°F), allowing them to adapt to almost all regions.
