Description

The Hellebore (x) sternii Grey Star is a lovely variety with cream-coloured flowers tinged with pale pink, which owes its uniqueness to its evergreen leaves, marbled with silver grey and pale green, whose ornamental qualities are undeniable!

This hybrid hellebore is the result of a cross-breeding between Corsican Hellebore (Helleborus argutifolius), with glaucous leaves, green flowers and good hardiness, and the magnificent Green Hellebore (Helleborus lividus) native to the island of Majorca, with a compact habit, small, often marbled leaves, and plum-coloured stems and flowers.

Hellebore sternii Grey Star offers a dense and compact growth, with strong upright stems that carry both foliage and flowers, giving it an original habit. Arranged in terminal clusters, the flowers are pale pink in bud and cream-coloured when fully open. The highly decorative leaves are tough, evergreen, marbled with silver grey and pale green, and are also serrated along the edges, adding extra appeal to the plant.

In contrast to oriental hellebores, Hellebore (x) sternii Grey Star grows in full sun (tolerates partial shade in hot regions) in any well-draining and permeable soil, and tolerates rocky and limestone soils. Very hardy, it withstands cold and dry winters very well but dislikes water stagnation during winter.

Plant it in a rock garden, on a slope, along a path in a meadow garden or a romantic garden, alongside heucheras, botanical tulips, ornamental garlic, and evergreen grasses.

Planting and care

The (x) sternii Grey Star Hellebore grows in full sun or light shade, in any well-draining soil. They thrive in deeply worked soil mixed with sand and gravel in heavy and clayey soils. In acidic soil, preferably add a little lime. Water the young plants well after planting but not excessively afterwards. Regularly remove wilted leaves. Avoid planting the plants close to each other to promote their development.
