Description

This Oriental Hellebore White with Red Centre is a lovely variety with pure white flowers, embellished at the centre with a  deep red row of petaloids that add a strong intensity.

Originally from the northwest of Turkey to the Caucasus, northeast of Greece, the Oriental Hellebore is a perennial plant that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -15°C. It is composed of basal palmate leaves, slightly dentate, dark green and shiny. These are evergreen leaves of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16 in) at maturity and a spread of 30 cm (12 in). Between February and April, a bouquet of single flowers 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) in diameter forms. These flowers are cup-shaped and inclined. The Hellebore is a bushy plant. It does not like to be moved once it is established, the young shoots take a little time to flower.

It is suitable both as cut flowers and in beds, borders or planters. Over time the flowers of the Hellebore do not fade like the majority of other flowers, but dry out.

Each Hellebore that grows from a seed is unique in its flower colour; thus slight variations in colours can exist between two plants - this is normal, and inevitable. However, if the difference is too significant and distorts the desired effect, we will refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

The Oriental Hellebore White with Red Centre grows in any acidic, rich, and light soil, in partial or light shade, sheltered from cold and dominant winds. This perennial is planted from the beginning of autumn to spring, to flower between February and April. It thrives in deeply worked soil mixed with a quantity of organic material. To fertilise, use bone meal or another organic fertiliser. Water the young plants well after planting and then add a mulch layer of 2 to 5 cm (0.8 to 2 in). Regularly remove wilted leaves to improve flowering. Be sure to maintain a planting distance of 30 to 40cm (12 to 16 in) between each young plant, to promote their development. The Hellebore doesn't like stagnant water as it risks rotting.
