Planted in September and still no flowers, nor buds. Very disappointed.

Description

Originating from northwest Turkey to the Caucasus and northeastern Greece, the White Oriental Hellebore is a pure white perennial plant that will brighten up the shaded areas of your garden in winter. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F) with palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and shiny, evergreen basal leaves, 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in) long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.

The Oriental Hellebore reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) at maturity and spreads over 30 cm (12in). From January to March, a bouquet of single cup-shaped flowers form, measuring 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter. Hellebore is a bushy plant which does not like to be moved once established, with young plants taking some time to bloom.

This toxic plant should be handled with care. It is suitable as cut flowers and in flowerbeds, borders or planters. Over time, Hellebore flowers do not wilt like the majority of other flowers, but rather dry up.

Each seed-sown Hellebore has a unique flower colour: thus slight colour variations may exist between two plants, which is normal and inevitable. However, if the difference is too significant and distorts the desired effect, we will refund or replace the affected plant.

Planting and care

Helleborus orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral, in partial or light shade and sheltered from the wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to flower from January to March. It thrives in deeply worked soil mixed with organic matter. To feed, use bone meal or another organic fertilizer. In acidic soil, add a little lime. Water the plants well and add a layer of mulch 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) thick. Regularly remove faded leaves. Cut back most of the leaves to highlight the flowers. Be careful not to plant the plants too close together to promote their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water as it may cause it to rot.
