Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Everydaylily Punch Yellow', like all daylilies from the Everydaylily series, combines exceptional floribundance with a compact habit. These border daylilies bloom continuously from late spring until the first frost, producing up to 400 flowers in a mature season. In this selection, 'Punch Yellow', the flowers are wide, trumpet-shaped, composed of yellow petals and bicolored yellow and salmon orange sepals. This easy-care perennial is magnificent in borders, delightful in pots, and perfect in a romantic or natural setting.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family Liliaceae, or Hémerocallidaceae according to classifications. They are hardy perennial plants with deciduous foliage in winter or sometimes semi-evergreen. Like all its American Everydaylily series sisters, the variety' Punch Yellow' comes from the excellent border daylily 'Stella de Oro'. It grows quickly, forming a reasonably dense clump that will not exceed 35-40 cm (14-16in) in height, with a relative spread of 50 cm: daylilies tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The flowers measure about 9 cm (4in) in diameter. The petals are wide, thick, slightly wavy, and slightly undulate on the edges. Each flower lasts only one day, but the flowering continuously renews itself over a long period between June and October. The iridescent texture of the petals enhances the flower colour. The foliage is linear and deciduous, disappearing in winter. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but they are more opulent and much more floriferous in cool and fertile soil.

Very easy to grow, daylilies thrive in both partial shade and full sun. Some can be invasive, so divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Daylilies are often called "the perfect perennial plant," due to their vibrant colours, their ability to tolerate any type of environment, and their compatibility with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps in your borders and flowerbeds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. 'Everydaylily Punch Yellow' pairs well with campanulate flowers, catmintspenstemons, asters, chamomiles, or paniculate phlox. On a balcony or terrace, it will be stunning for months. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Everydaylily' Hemerocallis in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow both in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
