Description

Iris pseudacorus var bastardii is a form of Marsh Iris with soft and creamy yellow flowers, less vibrant than the species. It is always grown at the water's edge. In nature, the Marsh Iris thrives in ditches and near fresh and stagnant water sources. It is a good bank stabiliser, also used to clean contaminated soil and water. Its upright clumps provide structure and vitality to wet banks. Its utilitarian qualities should not overshadow its elegant and soft, tender yellow flowers. Plant it in full sun or partial shade, on the edge of a pond or slightly submerged.

Marsh Iris is a semi-aquatic rhizomatous perennial, belonging to the Iridaceae family found in a large part of Europe, up to the gates of Asia. Further south, it is found all around the Mediterranean. It has green, glabrous, slender and narrow, evergreen leaves, ending in a point. Iris pseudacorus var bastardii flowers are soft pastel yellow, finely veined with brown in the centre, grouped in pairs or threes at the top of the floral stem from June to August. It reaches a height of 80 cm (32in) to 1.20 m (4ft) with no theoretical limit to its spread. It is a perfect plant for gardens of all kinds with a water feature. Its flowers are decorative and elegant, with a touch of romance.

Iris pseudacorus var bastardii is very hardy and adaptable. It likes sunny exposures with Reeds or Cattails for wild atmospheres, in a bed or border permanently submerged or at least part of the year. Otherwise, you can plant it with Hostas, Goatsbeards, Astilbes.
