Planting and care

Outside of a few annuals, most are excellent summer perennials, even though they have the reputation of being poorly hardy; most of the species and varieties we cultivate have withstood all our winters. The only drawback of some varieties, especially hybrids, is that they are sometimes short-lived; the stumps hollow out and rot. The best way to make them last is to divide the stumps every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Once regenerated, they will be your companions for life. All are deciduous and the foliage completely disappears in winter.
