Description

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sebastiaan Maas’ is a sturdy herbaceous peony of fine stature prized for its large double, bright pink flowers and its pleasant fragrance. Its prolonged, fairly late flowering extends the peony season in the garden. Not very susceptible to diseases, it lives for a long time in herbaceous borders and romantic gardens. Its very pink flowers always make an impact in flower arrangements.

This variety belongs to the Paeoniaceae family. It is derived from Paeonia lactiflora, the Chinese peony or Chinese herbaceous peony which bears the Latin names Paeonia albiflora, Paeonia edulis, Paeonia fragrans and Paeonia sinensis. It is a deciduous perennial native to temperate Asia. This peony can be found in the wild from southeastern Siberia to northern and eastern China, as well as in Mongolia, Manchuria and the Russian Far East.

The cultivar ‘Sebastiaan Maas’ was raised in the Netherlands in 1984. The plant forms a dense, regular and upright clump over time, reaching 90cm to 1m in height, even more in rich soil, with a spread of 50 to 80cm. It establishes slowly, but gets bigger over the years. Flowering occurs between May and June, earlier or later, depending on the climate. The flowers are double to very double, large, full, from pure pink to deep pink depending on the stage of opening. Their centre is tighter, more crumpled. They emit a pleasant fragrance and are borne on sturdy stems equipped with lateral buds that slightly prolong the flowering. The deciduous foliage is composed of slightly glossy grey-green leaves tinged with reddish-brown, with smooth leaflets. It remains decorative all summer before disappearing in autumn. As with other herbaceous peonies, its crown is fleshy, thick, durable, and does not like to be moved.

This vigorous peony has a place in a large herbaceous border, in a wide border, or near a path, where its flowers can be easily picked. Its bright pink colour pairs easily with pastel blooms. Surround it with white and pink foxgloves, clumps of Astrantia ‘Roma’, campanulas ‘Loddon Anna’, and a pastel pink peony, 'Shirley Temple' for example.

Planting and care

The best time to plant 'Sebastiaan Maas' peonies is in autumn. Plant peonies in full sun or in a bright position (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day), spaced 60cm apart. They appreciate cold winters, which promote dormancy and flower formation. The soil should be loose, deep, fertile and moist. They need space and dislike competition from other species. Prepare a hole 50cm deep and mix an organic fertiliser into your soil, partly refill, place your plants and cover with 4-5cm of soil above the buds. After planting, firm down and water generously.
