Planting and care

The Itoh peony ‘First Arrival’ should preferably be planted in October or November, in full sun, in deep, fertile, humus-bearing, moist and perfectly drained soil. Light partial shade is tolerated in warm regions, but an overly shaded position reduces flowering. It tolerates slightly acidic, neutral or chalky soils, but dislikes stagnant water and soils that dry out in spring. The buds on a stump supplied as bare roots are placed 5 cm below the soil surface. A spacing of 90 cm allows the clump to take on its natural habit. Regular watering is beneficial during the first two years and in dry springs. An annual application of well-rotted compost maintains soil fertility, but the centre of the stump must not be covered. The sturdy stems do not need staking. Dead flowers are removed, while the foliage is retained until it has completely dried out. This peony dislikes being moved and sometimes takes two or three years to reach its full potential.
