Description
The Old Rose Dandy Itoh Peony is an herbaceous peony with single petals of a curious pale lilac pink shaded with purple, with a coppery heart. As they open the flowers contain lovely dark plum smudges that catch the eye.
This opulent herbaceous peony has deciduous, alternate leaves composed of green leaflets. In May the large, solitary, semi-double flowers measuring 15cm (6in) in diameter are borne at the end of a long, semi-rigid stem measuring 80cm (32in) in height.
The 'Old Rose Dandy' Peony dislikes heavy waterlogged soils, especially in winter. Improve your garden soil with sand and compost. Add compost every year in March. Avoid permanent mulching which can encourage diseases. Partial shade is ideal for beautiful flowering.
The 'Old Rose Dandy' Peony is often planted in groups of 3 plants in a shrub or perennial border. It pairs beautifully with irises or roses. The cut flowers are stunning in a bouquet.
Tip: Herbaceous peonies should not be planted more than 3cm (1in) deep, otherwise they will take several years to bloom again.

Planting and care
The Old Rose Dandy Itoh Peony should be planted from mid-September to April, leaving a spacing of 80cm (32in), in fertile, deep, humus-bearing, moist, and well-drained soil. Choose a sunny but not scorching spot, with partial shade in hotter southern regions. Avoid permanent mulching as it can bring diseases, and apply rose fertiliser or compost in March. Pruning is unnecessary, but remove faded flowers and stained parts to prevent fungal diseases. Divide old clumps in autumn only if the plant becomes overcrowded. Be careful, as it has delicate roots and dislikes being moved; following this operation it may not flower for several years. Cut the foliage down to ground level between February and April or October and November. Provide a support stake for the flower stems.
