Description
Paeonia × suffruticosa 'Zhao Fen' or 'Pink of the Past' is a very old Chinese tree peony, cultivated in the Zhao family garden at the beginning of the 19th century. This curious variety bears large, bright powdery pink flowers with a delicate fragrance in spring, whose form varies from a single cup to a very double crown. In the garden, give it a place of honour, near a bench, not far from the terrace or in front of a shrub border.
This tree peony belongs to the Paeoniaceae family. It is one of the Chinese varieties, cultivated for centuries under the name mudan, which in horticultural usage is translated as moutan peony, tree peony or shrubby peony. Paeonia × suffruticosa designates a woody hybrid linked to Paeonia jishanensis × Paeonia rockii. Its birthplace is Henan province, in central China.
'Zhao Fen' belongs to the Zhongyuan group, that of cultivars originating from the central Chinese plains. Its Chinese name, 赵粉, is read as Zhao Fen: the pink of the Zhao. It comes from the Zhao garden of Caozhou, present-day Heze in Shandong, a major Chinese centre for peony cultivation during the Qing dynasty. Its history is linked to the gardens of this family of growers, notably Sangli Yuan, whose peony catalogue was written in 1828 by Zhao Mengjian. Chinese gardeners count it among the great classic peonies, alongside 'Yao Huang', 'Wei Zi' and 'Dou Lu'. In local tradition, the peony was first cultivated for its medicinal root, danpi, before becoming the flower of opulence, of scholars' gardens and painted scenes. Less imperial than 'Yao Huang', less theatrical than 'Wei Zi', 'Zhao Fen' is a graceful plant, with its pink, fragrant and changeable flowers.
'Zhao Fen' is a deciduous shrub: its branches persist in winter, its leaves fall in autumn. The plant forms a spreading bush, branching quite low, reaching 1.20 to 1.50m in height with a similar spread. Its branches are short and thick, but some bend slightly when flowers are numerous. It is a slow-growing plant, but once established, it flowers generously in spring, between mid-April and mid-May depending on the climate. The flowers measure 17 to 20cm in diameter; they are light pink to silvery pinkish-white, well-fragranced. Their form varies greatly: some corollas open like a lotus, others take on an anemone, crown or very double ball appearance. All these forms can appear on the same shrub. The outer petals are broad, thin, supple, arranged in two or three rows. The inner petals are smaller and tighter on very double flowers. Yellow stamens are visible on single or semi-double flowers; single flowers reveal a red pistil. The foliage consists of large, fairly light green leaves, divided into elongated or rounded leaflets, toothed at the edge, which let light through. The fruits, when they form, contain large black seeds that do not faithfully reproduce the cultivar.
Its English name 'Pink of the Past' tells the story of a very old garden filled with pink flowers that hold the memory of past springs. Plant this tree peony as a specimen, sheltered from the wind, in a prominent position. You can also place it in front of very fragrant old roses 'Rose de Rescht', which bloom from May-June, alongside a purple tree peony 'Bai Yuan Hong Xia' and a small pink Japanese spirea 'Crispa'.
This variety is sometimes grown in pots for forcing: growers pot it in autumn, then control cold and heat to obtain flowers for the festive season.

Planting and care
Preferably plant tree peony Zhao Fen in partial shade, or in full sun in northern regions. Six hours of sunlight per day are necessary to achieve beautiful flowering. Contrasting climates (continental), with marked winters and springs and hot summers, favour particularly abundant flowering. Morning sun is especially appreciated in Mediterranean areas, as scorching situations should be avoided. Plant it in fertile, deep soil, slightly acidic, neutral or even slightly chalky, moist but well-drained. Once well established in deep soil, tree peonies need no watering in summer, especially the varieties that flower early in spring. Its cold resistance is excellent, but the flower buds can be damaged by strong, dry, cold winds.
Easy-going tree peonies require little care but deserve careful planting. When planting, dig a large hole 40 to 50cm deep and at least as wide. Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf mould, and river sand or gravel if your soil is very heavy and compact. Add crushed horn, bone meal and dried blood to the bottom of the planting hole. Tree peonies dislike competition from the roots of other plants; allow a spacing of 1m from neighbours. The graft must be buried about twenty centimetres deep so that the plant gradually becomes independent from its rootstock. Water generously, but spaced 8 to 15 days apart for the first two years, from March to September. Peonies have a reputation for not liking to be moved. This is why they should not be disturbed after planting. Avoid pruning unless the plant becomes bare at the base. If this is the case, prune at the level of the basal shoots. Provide a stake to support the flower stems and cut off faded flowers.
'Zhao Fen' can be grown for several years in a very large pot, provided it is a deep container with several drainage holes. Choose a tub at least 50cm in diameter, with 40 to 45cm of actual depth; a volume of 60 to 80 litres is suitable. Prepare a consistent mixture, formed of about 40% slightly clayey topsoil, 40% rich potting compost and 20% fine pozzolana, pumice or fine gravel. Place 3 to 5cm of coarse pozzolana at the bottom of the pot. Position the peony in morning sun or soft light, as dark pots quickly heat the roots. Water regularly during the growing season, without allowing water to stagnate in a saucer. In winter, leave the pot outdoors as the plant needs the cold to flower well again.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
