Received a lovely young plant, but it turns out I had ordered blue ones and received magenta ones instead, another mistake.

Description

A bushy variety with summer flowers, Penstemon 'Russian River' produces magnificent flowers of an intense mauve-violet colour.

Semi-evergreen, Penstemon 'Russian River' forms a bushy clump 60-80cm (24-32in) in height and width. It produces elongated bell-shaped flowers in purple speckled with purple inside the corolla and arranged on stiff spikes. The flowering lasts for 3 months provided that the faded stems are regularly removed.

Its narrow, apple green leaves, 9 cm (4in) long, are evergreen in warmer climates but become deciduous in cold regions.

This perennial is quite hardy and easy to grow. It thrives in the sun, in well-drained soil.

Planting and care

Plant Penstemon in a cool and well-drained soil, in a sunny position. Add some sand to the planting soil, as Penstemon is sensitive to excessive winter moisture associated with freezing temperatures. Apply a fertiliser such as bonemeal. You can cut back the faded stems to prolong flowering. Penstemons are not very tolerant of severe winter frosts, so mulch them to a height of 20-25cm (8-10in). Prune your plants to 25-30cm (10-12in) above ground level at the end of winter, but not before!

Care

Pruning instructions Prune to 20 cm (8in) once frosts are no longer a concern. This will promote branching and flowering. During the flowering period, it will be necessary to remove faded flowers as they appear, by cutting the spike at the axil of new shoots (between the stem and the leaves), encouraging a second wave of flowers and a vigorous and compact young plant.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time April to May, August to September
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
