Description

Phlox paniculata 'Famous Purple' has long lasting, vibrant and cheerful summer flowers, ranging from light purple to magenta. From the 'Famous' series, it is a variety of Phlox paniculata with a compact habit, well-branched, very floriferous, and more resistant to mildew. Throughout the summer, this beautiful plant produces colourful flowers in bright magenta purple, marked with white in the centre, pleasantly scented, on medium green foliage. With its lovely habit, it makes an excellent variety to place at the front of borders or in a container on the patio. Create charming bouquets with its long-lasting flowers that last well in a vase.

Phlox paniculata ''Famous Purple' belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. It is part of the excellent 'Famous' series, developed in the Netherlands.  It is a perennial plant with a woody stump forming a dense and rounded clump composed of leafy stems. This variety forms a dense clump reaching 70 cm (28in) in height and 60 cm (24in) in width at maturity. The stems, stiff and strong, are covered with lanceolate leaves of medium green, measuring 10-12 cm (4-5in) in length. The flowering, longer than most tall phlox, starts in July, and continues until September, provided that faded inflorescences are regularly removed. The buds open into small flowers with tubular corollas, ranging from light purple to vivid magenta pink, marked with white in the centre. They are grouped at the top of sturdy stems that do not bend under the weight of the flowers. These flowers are gathered in erect, dense, and pyramidal panicles, 15 cm (6in) in length, which are pleasantly scented. The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous. The above-ground vegetation, deciduous, disappears in winter and regrows in spring.

Phlox paniculata are perennial plants commonly found in cottage gardens, as their legendary simplicity and generosity are almost unmatched in perennial borders. To the point that one sometimes wonders what was planted in gardens before their discovery. The varieties from the Famous series are more disease-resistant, have an attractive habit, and perform exceptionally well in borders. The Phlox ''Famous Purple' can be planted with its siblings from the 'Famous' series, with dwarf asters, white or pink lilies, intense blue perennial flax, or annual lobelias with which it forms very cheerful combinations. Phlox paniculata 'Famous Purple' is a top-notch perennial for flowering containers that adorn balconies and terraces.

Planting and care

Phlox paniculata are easy to grow plants. Phlox paniculata Famous Purple prefers a moist and rich soil, even clay soils. It needs sun to flower well. An environment that is too dry or too hot makes the foliage susceptible to powdery mildew. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it requires regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning faded flowers promotes a second flowering at the end of the season. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
