Description

Phlox paniculata Mystic Green is an attractive, rare cultivar, with enchanting flowers. Its dark green lanceolate foliage enhances its nuanced and contrasting flowers. It develops purple bracts in summer that open into compound panicles of multiple small star-shaped flowers in pastel shades: pink-violet bordered by pale yellow and anise green. This medium-sized, unique and ever-changing variety has well-scented flowers, which are similar to the panicles of certain hydrangeas in terms of its colours and textures. An excellent deciduous perennial, for borders or containers, which thrives in a damp and fertile soil, in a sunny position.

Phlox paniculata Mystic Green belongs to the family of Polemoniaceae. It is a variety obtained in 2010 by J.Verschhoor in the Netherlands. The plant develops from spring into a bushy clump with a rather upright habit, composed of leafy stems. It does not exceed 60 to 70 cm (24 to 28in) in height when in flower and 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in) in width. The stiff and sturdy stems are covered with single, dark green leaves, measuring approximately 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) in length. The flowering begins in July, at the height of summer, and continues until September, provided that faded blooms are removed. Emerging from dark purple bracts, the floral buds are green and open into small flowers composed of unfused petals in pink bordered by pale yellow and anise green. The flowers are clustered at the ends of erect, very dense, pyramidal panicles, measuring 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6in) in length, which are pleasantly fragrant.  The flowering is melliferous and nectariferous.

Phlox paniculata are perennial plants commonly found in ornamental gardens, as their legendary simplicity and generosity are almost unmatched in perennial borders. They go well with Monarda or Daisies. "Mystic Green" pairs well with delphiniums, roses, or penstemons, and is perfect in English-style mixed borders. Consider it with Penstemon digitalis Husker Red. This Phlox can be associated with white asters such as Aster pringlei Monte Cassino, border daylilies in the same tone, and Rose Jacqueline du Pré. The border can be punctuated with silver or grey foliage: wormwoods, cinerarias, lamb's ears.  Phlox Mystic Green is a top-notch variety for container planting and creating your bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant Phlox Mystic Green in full sun or partial shade. Choose a rich and well-drained soil, which you have deeply loosened, as phlox do not like too much root competition with other plants. Stake if necessary, the stems can bend under the weight of flowers and leaves. Prune the flowers when they have faded, in order to prolong the flowering.  Phlox is susceptible to powdery mildew; ensure regular watering in summer.
