Description

Phlox paniculata Younique Cerise, with its intensely magenta pink coloured flowers, is part of a series of phlox selected for their compact habit, abundant, prolonged and fragrant flowering, as well as their ease of cultivation. Resistant to heat and humidity, these varieties are less susceptible to powdery mildew and will bloom for almost three months if care is taken to remove faded flower panicles. Perfect in romantic settings, both in the garden and in pots, the Younique phlox provides perfect flowers for bouquets.

Phlox paniculata Younique Cerise belongs to the Polemoniaceae family. It is a herbaceous perennial with a woody base that forms a well-branched clump of leafy stems from spring onwards.  Eventually, the plant reaches about 45 cm (18in) in height (foliage) and 40-45 cm (16-18in) in width. The stiff, somewhat brittle stems are covered with alternate, simple, ovate, and lanceolate leaves of a vibrant green colour. Flowering begins in June-July, varying depending on the climate, and continues until September, provided faded inflorescences are removed.  In full bloom, the plant can reach a height of 65-70 cm (26-28in) in rich soil. The small flowers, measuring 1.5 to 2.5 cm (1in) in diameter, have a tubular corolla of a uniform cherry pink colour. They are densely grouped at the end of the stems in pleasantly scented panicles. The flowering is nectar-rich and attractive to bees.

Phlox paniculata is a classic perennial plant in cottage gardens, as its legendary simplicity and generosity are almost unmatched in perennial borders.  They pair well with Monardas and Leucanthemums. You can combine the Younique series Phlox with each other, with asters, or with white flowers to create an elegant combination. Tall phlox makes good companions for roses, creating a harmonious colour scheme. Phlox paniculata Younique Cerise is a top-notch perennial for brightening up balconies, borders, and for creating beautiful bouquets at home.

Planting and care

Phlox Younique Cerise will prefer a damp and rich soil, even clay which is well drained. It needs sun to flower well.  An atmosphere that is too dry or too hot makes the foliage more susceptible to powdery mildew, although this selection is less susceptible to this disease. Planted in the sun in a climate with hot summers, it will require regular watering and mulching at the base. Pruning the faded inflorescences promotes flowering renewal until the end of summer. Protect young plants from slugs, which are fond of their tender shoots.
