Description

This collection of 5 exotic White/Blue salvias brings together two beautiful forms of the Salvia patens, a tender perennial plant native to Mexico often grown as an annual in our climates, but whose beauty and floribundity fully justify their presence in all gardens. Flowering from July to October, reaching their peak in September, these easy-to-grow plants are magnificent in borders or along a pathway, delightful in pots, and perfect in a romantic or natural setting.

The collection consists of 5 plants:

- x 3 Salvia patens :  the incredible blue of its flowers gave it the name "gentian sage," as well as its large flowers with a typical shape.

- x 2  Salvia patens White Trophy: a very beautiful selection with immaculate white flowers.

 Individually labelled.

Salvia patens is a plant in the mint family, like all other salvias. It is an upright perennial, measuring 60 to 80 cm in height when in flower, with a spread of 45 cm. Its stems bear large, opposite, hairy, triangular, deep green leaves. It grows very quickly and is capable of flowering in the same year as sowing. The inflorescences appear from July to October, but it is in September that it is most floriferous. The flowers are arranged in clusters at the terminal part of the apical stems. Measuring 2 to 3 cm in length, they are rather large compared to those of most other salvias. They are arranged in pairs along the stem and are visible from afar. The flowers are nectar-rich and attractive to bees, feeding many pollinating insects. The root of Salvia patens is thick and tuberous. This sage self-seeds easily in well-drained and light soil.

The gentian sage is an ideal plant for sunny flower beds or borders. The white or blue of its flowers pairs well with the intense pink of Salvia microphylla flowers, which are also at their peak beauty in September. It can also be interesting to combine it with asters and grey foliage plants (such as Artemisia, Senecio vira-vira...) that require similar growing conditions.

Planting and care

Salvia patens requires a very sunny location to flower. Its tuberous root allows it to withstand heat and drought, but in return, it is sensitive to winter humidity. The gentian sage should be planted in spring in a fairly rich, well-drained soil with a neutral tendency. Its flowering is more generous with regular flower fertiliser every 15 days in summer. The faded flower spikes can be removed to prolong the flowering.

In regions with harsh winters, it is cultivated as an annual. It is possible to remove the tubers from the ground and overwinter them like Dahlias. In milder regions, its winter survival depends mainly on soil drainage. The plant benefits from being completely cut back in spring. It will vigorously regrow and flower earlier than plants grown as annuals.

To increase the hardiness of this sage, it can be a good idea to spread a layer of coarse sand or gravel at the bottom of the planting hole (40 cm deep). To prevent the crown from receiving too much moisture in winter, it can be covered with a layer of protected dead leaves topped with a 'roof' made of a large tile, plexiglass, or any other waterproof material held above the leaf pile for ventilation. With this technique, the plant can withstand -10°C.

In a pot, the gentian sage requires a sufficient volume of soil to develop its roots. Choose a pot of 20 to 30 litres that can be stored in a cool, dry place during winter, protected from frost. Water with a nutrient solution every 15 days in summer to support flowering.
