Description

Salvia przewalskii is a bushy perennial with broad pilous light green leaves. The flowers, carried by ramified stalks, are of a rare purplish-red to reddish-brown colour, with a viscid and pilous calyx.

The flower spikes will add a unique touch to floral compositions. In the garden, this species will look stunning alongside cosmos or Nankin perilla in a tone-on-tone combination.

Whether they are annual, perennial, or shrubby, salvias are always very decorative. Their only drawback, at least for us, is that our good wheat soil is not really a good soil for salvias! We have to use Sioux tricks to grow some of them.

Planting and care

Plant in light, porous, poor, rocky, even sandy, moist but well-drained soil, preferably without limestone. Plant in full sun. It fears heavy, rich soils that take a long time to warm up, under a humid climate. This hardy plant can withstand temperatures as low as -12 to -15°C (10.4 to 5°F).

See also the annual varieties of sage, which are easier to grow. Find them in the SEEDS section.
