Sedum pachyclados - Stonecrop

Sedum pachyclados, also known as the artichoke stonecrop, is a small, compact, and suckering perennial that forms a carpet of fleshy, glaucous green rosettes, illuminated by delicate star-shaped flowers. Its small, evergreen succulent leaves create the effect of a carpet of roses. They perfectly cover any poor soil and easily withstand drought. This hardy succulent is adorned with pale yellow-orange sparkling star-shaped inflorescences in May-June. Hardy and adaptable to any soil, even poor and mediocre, it can be planted along a dry path, in a rockery, or in a pot.

Originating from Mexico, this perennial stonecrop is very hardy. You can still adopt this sturdy perennial if your soil is poor, rather dry, even rocky, or slightly chalky. It withstands temperatures below -15°C (5°F), requires no maintenance, and promises to enliven the garden with visits from butterflies. Stonecrops are easy-to-care-for succulents with flowers and foliage in various shades that can create dazzling displays, whether in borders, containers, or rockeries. However, if you have rich, moist, and heavy substrate, you can plant them at the edge of a border. They will acclimatise without any problem if you take care to add gravel and place them in full sun. Above all, they should not be subjected to excess moisture in winter or covered with dead leaves, as this could cause them to wither.

The species pachyclados presents itself in the form of rosettes of flat, ovate leaves, arranged in an imbricate manner like a rose, not exceeding 6 to 10cm (2 to 4in) in height, They are connected to each other by fleshy, creeping brown suckers. Only the rosette of leaves at the end of the stems persists. They bear small, leathery, oblong leaves with unevenly toothed tips. This semi-evergreen foliage has glaucous green nuances that sometimes vary depending on climatic conditions, like most of its counterparts in the same genus. Its inflorescences in small corymbs, although few in number, are nonetheless charming and delicate, composed of multiple pale-yellow star-shaped flowers tinged with orange in May-June, which also evolve subtly. The centre darkens and takes on a warm orange hue.

Sedum pachyclados is an asset to bring cheerfulness to every corner. Plant it along paths, at the edge of a patio, in a dry-stone wall, between paving stones, or in pots that you can move according to your desires. It combines easily with all rockery plants, requires no maintenance, and colonises abandoned spaces. It is suitable for greening roofs. In borders, it can be placed under south-facing bushes to fill poor soil. It pairs well with euphorbias and all its stonecrop cousins to offer you a long-lasting decoration without effort.
